What is the Berwick Wildlife Group

Who we are.

Our members have an interest in the environment and want to learn more about our wildlife and help conserve it for the enjoyment of people today and the generations to come.

Individually we are not "experts", but together we are learning, and building up knowledge and expertise to provide information on Berwick's fauna and flora.

In 2004 a Phase One vegetation survey of Berwick was undertaken for the Market Towns Initiative by the Berwickshire Naturalists' Club.

This survey identified a number of valuable wildlife habitats around Berwick, most of which were unprotected, in need of management and above all requiring scientific survey on which to base such management.

Berwick Wildlife Group was set up to try to remedy this situation.

What we do.

Our main aims are to :-

  • Raise awareness of local wildlife.

  • Encourage people to appreciate and enjoy wildlife.

  • Train people in the principles and practice of wildlife recording.

  • Gather data and to use this to give advice on wildlife management.

We therefore arrange events,

  • Indoor talks by people involved with wildlife or conservation.

  • Walks and visits to nearby places of interest, led by members or appropriate experts.

  • Surveys of wildlife so that people can learn the process of wildlife recording and at the same time add to the database of local information.

These are open to everyone.

In addition members can:

  • Receive our quarterly newsletter, including wildlife records, news of the Group's activities and information about forthcoming events.

  • Submit wildlife records for the newsletter and database.

  • Attend workshops and learn new scientific skills and techniques.

  • Take part in our lobbying and advisory work.

Would you like to be involved

We are a small group of about 40 people.

All members provide valuable support for the local environment through their subscription.

Most enjoy our talks and walks, and many help with the range of surveys and behind-the-scenes organisation essential for the success of the group.

Members do not have to have special skills or knowledge, just an interest in their environment. Come along to one of our advertised meetings and see if you might like to join us.
