HELP PROTECT RED SQUIRRELS

Red squirrels are under immediate threat from the non-native American grey squirrel. Greys rapidly out-compete red squirrels for food and resources, and can transmit Squirrelpox Virus

This virus does not affect greys, but is lethal to red squirrels

Red Squirrel ...........Grey Squirrel

  • Smaller and more slender·
  • Colour usually reddish-brown with a pale ‘bib’, but can vary greatly.
  • Tail a single colour
  • Often timid, spends much time in tree cover
  • Up to twice the size of a red squirrel
  • Primarily grey with a white ‘bib’ and a red/brown tinge along back and tail
  • Often bold and inquisitive, frequently seen on ground

Please report any sightings of red or grey squirrels. This information is vital for red squirrel conservation efforts. Be vigilant for signs of disease such as lethargy, poor coordination, and lesions on areas of exposed skin. Red and Grey Squirrels.
